2) Where are you from?
pittsburgh. Where are you living
now? tampa.
3) What language/s do you speak? english, body-language (i don't
"vogue".....i "vague"), pig-latin, pooty-tang.
4) Dogs or Cats? Explain. cat.........isabella....7 years and counting
, bless her....
5) For you, what came first: paying to go to the club or breezing
in for free? sneaking in for
free due to being under age
6) Which of these came first: DJ'ing or producing? djing
7) What is your worst DJ experience? Explain.
WMC 1995. great party with
wink..then RITM live...then myself.
packed house with friends and a
"who's who" in music. the
week before i played a massive party in a brick building in carolina. it was so hot the red bricks of the building
were sweating ----dripping on to the records, but i didnt think much of it.
fast forward to WMC and there i am starting after RITM to a full house and my records are starting
to skip for no reason---and all of them-----i finally realized the water drops
were dirty and dried little deposits from the red brick the week before. so i did hardcore cleaning the rest of the
night. it just killed any instinctual
vibes. pulled it off but was way let
down because it was the first year we did our big WMC party in south beach and
not up at the old "edge" club in ft. lauderdale. its the worst because i had such high
expectations. its a tie between that
and one time fire dancers were getting sparks on my records and putting craters
in them......that was enough to make me leave.
8) What is your best production experience? Why?
the "three a.m. dub of RITM's "floori.d.a.". by the time we finished we were so unsure.
we had no idea if it would work. i
actually didn't listen to it for 6 months and i was pretty surprised at how it
sounded to me then. then 6 more months
went by and we got vinyl and it just seemed to make perfect sense out in a
club. was a growth spurt for sure. its cool to talk about now, but you cant
expect anyone to care about that stuff (your own feelings about your art) when
its new...it ends up capturing people's attention or it doesn't.
9) When did you realize you'd "made it" - or have
you?
"made it" to most would mean i was in joe public's
consciousness / the press more. so,
while i've been lucky enough to have a diverse list of places i've played or
had residencies from wicked to twilo to fabric and all the great small nights
in between......i've always stayed just below the radar to the masses. but having earned the respect of my peers has
meant everything. i dont mind being the
"underdog" to the more accessible world.
10) When touring/DJ'ing what is one thing you MUST bring? Why?
good attitude. lots of
things can go wrong.
11) What is your musical guilty pleasure, come on, be honest... If you say Berlin or Madonna we won't laugh,
we're alll friends here! Heheheh...
hey....i like berlin.
madonna has always been hit or miss, though. i listen to a lot of classic rock....but i dont feel
guilty. does porn count as music?
12) What is your favorite thing to cook?
my neighbor has inspired me to learn. i'm about to order this really nice knife......i only ever worked
in a small kitchen years back though.
nothing fancy that i'd be inviting friends over for back then!
13) At the nude beach... do you 'cover your shame' or do you go au
naturel?
methinks i'm pretty tan in a black light..... but, no nude beach (or any other beach!)
too soon before sunset for me thank you.
14) Where can you find the most beautiful girls in the world? (please don't say "on the
internet!")
in my experience ...mexico and south america.
15) Explain the origins (or meaning) of the expression "your
ass is grass!"
i can't...
16) What's your stance: Vinyl or CD? Or the happy co-existence thereof?
from the dj perspective....co-existance of all mediums, thank
you. and i still crave the scent of
acetates, too.
17) What is your favorite DJ mixer? (gear)
i've finally been won over by the allen and heath. not even for the filters as much as the range
of the EQ.
18) What is your favorite cartridge? Does it make that big of a difference?
a true "pair" that work the whole night. and yes, it makes a difference. i wouldn't use at home for hi-fi what i
would choose for club use.
19) If you could go back in history, where would you go and what
would you do?
late seventies....new york city.... just be me.
20) If you could ask us any question, what would it be?
would you please send me some music?
Marky’s response: of course I'll send you music! :)
