PAUL NOLAN - LIVERPOOL, UK – ALDERAAN, PLASTIC RECORDS

1) What is your name? (the one your parents gave you)

Paul Nolan

2) Where are you from?  Where are you living now?

Im from Liverpool UK and im still there. a great city with an ever improving vibe for parties these days

3) What language/s do you speak?

english, but would love to learn either spanish or japanese in the near future

4) Dogs or Cats?  Explain...

neither i hate them both, but if i had to have one or the other i would probably have to

go for a dog because they are stupidly loyal which can be a positive trait. cats are the most untrustworthy animals on the face of the earth

5) For you, what came first: paying to go to the club or breezing in for free?

thankfully paying!!! it gives a sense of perspective to now, when im lucky enough to do a lot if not

all of my clubbing for free these days, tho this is changing due to the nature of the scene changing

which i definitely dont mind as the scene is a lot more egalitarian now than what it used to be!

6) Which of these came first: DJ'ing or producing?

djing came before i even started going clubbing which is a bit mad compared to other djs i know.

producing is coming, ableit slowly. it's not as if you can just pick something up like djing and run with it,

its an expansive, very detailed process which i am loving getting to grips with

7) What is your worst DJ experience?  Explain.

well i havent had a really bad experience up to now, apart from somebody clearing the floor at alderaan once by vomiting all over the dancefloor

Alderaan was quite a small place so nobody was going near the floor with chunder all over it, which ruined the set, and it wasnt even my fault!

8) What is your best production experience?  Why?

everything i do is a great production experience to me, as i am learning constantly. its great, i feel like a child again my mind is like a sponge, soaking in everything, trying things and learning through trial and error. out of a lot of experiences in life, learnign and development has

to be one of th most exciting and fulfilling experiences i can have. makes you feel really alive

9) When did you realize you'd "made it" - or have you?

i havent made it, but i certainly acknowledge the fact that i have worked hard to get myself into a cetain position.

its time for me to really crank things up a gear, so im really excited about the future. i feel as if i havent even gotten started yet!

10) When touring/DJ'ing what is one thing you MUST bring?  Why?

myself, because its my party and ill play other peoples records if i want to :cp

11) What is your musical guilty pleasure, come on, be honest...  If you say Berlin or Madonna we won't laugh, we're all friends here! Heheheh...

well being a child of Thatcherism, the soundtrack to that early part of that era in british life has to be the pop bands, like go west, huey lewis and the news, don henley, and Berlin!!!!!

for me that was my first real experience of music and how important it is to people

12) What is your favorite thing to cook?

gotta be the old chinese stir fry, done properly in the wok, with beef fried in sweet soy sauce!

13) At the nude beach... do you 'cover your shame' or do you go au naturel?

i have no shame, but i think some things are better left to the imagination

14) Where can you find the most beautiful girls in the world?  (please don't say "on the internet!")

on the internet!!!

15) Explain the origins (or meaning) of the expression "your ass is grass!"

probably got something to do with running out of toilet paper...

16) What's your stance: Vinyl or CD?  Or the happy co-existence thereof?

both! i dont think one will or should take the other over. vinyl was an eternal thing. cds are great in their own way and with products like the cdj1000 cds can now be used better than ever. i think they will go alongisde vinyl but they will never supersede or take over vinyl purely because vinyl is cuh an icon for the scene and i dont think the scene would survive in a post vinyl world i have to be honest cds have killed off the acetate market, and thats a good thing really as now you can test production tracks without having to go to a cutting house and going through all the hassle, you can just take the cd to the club and pop it in and away you go. but theres something about vinyl, it has a physicality that cds will never have. its quite indefiniable, but vinyl is one of the reasons why the scene is as big as it is today

17) What is your favorite DJ mixer? (gear)

has to be the djm600 which i have at home for the effects and versatility. its a really powerful mixer once you know how to use everything properly in terms of sheer mixing delight, my votes have to go to either the old rotary Urei mixers or the new Vestax R1 premium. deadly smooth and they sound out of this world!

18) What is your favorite cartridge?  Does it make that big of a difference?

my favourite cartridge is the one that stays in the groove!

19) If you could go back in history, where would you go and what would you do?

i would go back to the last days before thatcher came to power in britain and do everything possible to stop conservative rule. having seen what those years of capitalist, materialist intervention did to the people of my country, breaking them up and turning them against each other to an extent, i would no doubt aim to prevent that re-occurring. we are still feeling the effects now

20) If you could ask us any question, what would it be?

is this like 20 questions or something?

Marky’s response: I guess so... thanks for playing!!!  :)
